Cooling tower range and approach

Calculate cooling tower range and approach from hot water, cold water and entering wet bulb temperatures.

What this means

Range is how much the tower cools the water. Approach is how close the cold water gets to the outdoor wet bulb. An approach that grows over time at similar conditions often points to fouled fill, poor water distribution or a fan problem.

Formula used

  • Range = hot water temperature − cold water temperature
  • Approach = cold water temperature − entering wet bulb
