Hydronic GPM, BTU and ΔT calculator

Solve heat transfer, flow or temperature difference for water. For glycol, enter specific gravity and specific heat from the fluid manufacturer.

What this means

The heat a hydronic loop moves depends on flow and temperature difference. If ΔT is much larger than design, flow is likely low; if it is much smaller, flow may be high or the load low. The 500 factor is for water; glycol mixtures carry less heat per gallon.

Formula used

  • BTU/h = 500 × GPM × ΔT (water)
  • Other fluids: factor = 500 × specific gravity × specific heat
  • Metric: kW = 4.19 × L/s × ΔT (K) for water
